Spring up your Little Black Dress

Quick! Picture your perfect spring outfit! I bet you pictured pastels, floral print, and anything loose and flowy. As much as we love this go-to look, we can’t forget about our old and faithful Little Black Dress (LBD). And I know what you’re thinking, how am I going to style a black dress in the Spring?! Well, look no further because your spring guide is here! Sadly I can’t save your GPA, but I sure can save you from forgetting about your LBD this season. All you need are the right accessories and a balance of complimenting colors to lighten up your otherwise dreary spring semester.

Here’s how!

Cardigan Chic

Unfortunately, Berkeley springs can be chilly and we often still have to layer. But not to worry, Garb has got you covered! (get it? Because I’m talking about cardigans. No? okay.) Say goodbye to your chunky knits and say hello to printed, lace, and bright-colored cardigans! These looks will instantly add character to your plain LBD and make you look like you’re living your best life rather than mourning over your last midterm. Cardigans are perfect if your dress is a bit on the shorter side or if you want to go for a more casual look. Just make sure to add some texture to your fit and get yourself a cardigan that is bright and light.

Blossoming with Belts

Belts are definitely not the first accessory that comes to mind when dressing up an outfit, but this spring hear me out. All you need are some statement belts that will tie your whole outfit together! To do this, I would go for a brown belt with a western metal buckle. This look is chic and fashion forward, and depending on the color belt you have, you can match your shoes with that color! Now you have a bohemian, flowy outfit to wear on the Glade for a nice spring picnic. If you want to go a different route, you can also try a printed belt to wrap around your waist. Whether you tie it into a little knot or a pretty bow, you can never go wrong when you’re styling a belt with a looser fitting black dress.

Stylin' Shoes

Shoes are a girl’s best friend, and in this case, they definitely shouldn’t be slept on. While sporting your simple LBD, you can really let your shoes shine this season! I went for these floral embroidered sneakers to keep it casual and comfy for those long walks across campus. But if you’re feeling a bit more extra or want to impress your Tinder date, then you can definitely slip into a sleek black piece and some strappy orange heels! The black dress and black shoes combo is classic, but not ideal when the weather is prime! With whatever look you’re going for, your accent shoes with color will definitely add a spring to your step.

Joyful in Jewelry

Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, there are so much to choose from! To dress up your LBD, try styling some jewelry that is bold and not your typical silver and gold accent. Most of your outfit is black anyway, so why not go for some bright red cherry earrings or a multi-colored statement necklace. Doing so will make a nice contrast from the black foundation of your LBD which will create the perfect balance this spring. These aren’t your usual go-to jewelry so you’ll definitely stand out amongst all the hoop earrings on campus.

And there you have it! You have four new ways to spring up your Little Black Dress. As much as I love wearing all black, there is so much you can do to add some color or flair to a plain outfit. I know UC Berkeley makes us feel like death, but there’s no need to look like it too. From one LBD fan to another, let us all rejoice in the rare moments of warm sun, blooming flowers and stylish spring forward accessories this season.
