Go Big or Go Home

The first person that comes to mind when someone walks by with oversized clothing is Billie Eilish. The eighteen-year-old is never seen without sporting intricate layers of oversized clothing. Whatever your opinion may be about her music, her reasoning behind her fashion choices made me fall in love with my oversized clothing on a whole new level. The popular singer explains that she uses her oversized clothing to prevent the sexualization/over-sexualization and objectification of her body.  So, when people look at her they focus on her art form and nothing else.

This concept is far from new. To fully understand her thought process we have to throw it back to the 20th century. Women began wearing bigger, less form-fitting clothing to make their bodies appear more masculine. Using clothes, women rejected the gender norms of the time to gain greater equality for women in the public sphere.

Jump to today, this style is still serving a similar purpose with a little twist. If you want to feel comfortable and empowered, the trend is the one for you. Wondering how  you can hop onto this bandwagon? Look no further. The trend is quite easy to accomplish. It can be intimidating to see Billie Eilish’s big outfits that are of course designer. But! Do not shy away! This style is for anyone and everyone. You don’t need to break the bank to find pieces. You can either raid your brother or dad’s closet or head over to your local thrift store men's section and search for large band tees or t-shirts with cool graphic designs. Remember those shirts that never fit right from relatives, this is their time to shine too! I find that clothes two or more sizes up usually fit best when it comes to this style. On top of this, you can keep the look simple and sweet by sticking to the basics. Or, spice it up by adding to the look with chunky boots or a cute fanny pack to cinch at the waist. If you’re fully trying to embrace the trend, a bold move would be to layer an oversized shirt or hoodie over some baggy shorts. Monochrome, all black or pop of color, it’s up to you!

I can’t wait to see where all of you take this look!
