Seven Ways to Style School Spirit

As a Berkeley student, an essential part of campus life is owning Cal gear. Whether it's painting your face blue and yellow for the Big Game or tossing on a blue-and-gold cap, there are a variety of ways to sport Cal spirit. As for daily school life, it can get tiresome wearing the same combination of a Cal tee/sweatshirt and jeans to class. Here's a week's worth of inspiration—from girlie to glam—to help you reinvent your school apparel.

MONDAY: GIRLY

STYLING: CAL SWEATSHIRT

WITH: American Apparel blue-and-red tennis skirt; Forever 21 black puffer jacket; Target chelsea boots.

A student's greatest foe: Mondays. Though some of us may have had 7ams in high school, somehow the 8ams in college are so much worse. Conceal your weekend lag by tossing on a school sweatshirt and color coordinating the rest of your outfit.

Primary colors are very popular at the moment, so try them out with this red-and-blue American Apparel tennis skirt. Similarly, the black puffer jacket is both a trendy and cold-weather staple piece, especially in the Bay Area. Toss on fun socks (because who doesn't like quirky printed socks) and some comfy sneakers, and now you're ready to face the day.

TUESDAY: EDGY ATHLEISURE

STYLING: CAL SWEATPANTS

WITH: bralette tops; Zara ankle boots; ring-detail belt; H&M yellow-tinted sunnies and leather jacket

Picking up momentum and want to crank your fashion game up a notch? We've got the look for you!

Channel your edgy and sporty alter-ego while maintaining your comfort by pairing a bold bralette or cropped tank with loose-fitting sweatpants. To stay warm, layer a cropped leather jacket to showcase your waist and maintain the aesthetic. Last, slip on some heeled ankle booties to add some height and streamline your look.

TIP: Want to style this look further? Add more accessories! Slip on some fishnets under your sweatpants (making sure it pops out from the waistband) and toss on some sunglasses. Currently, we're loving color-tinted ones, like these yellow ones or these, because they protect your eyes and are an easy way to add color to a monochrome look.

WEDNESDAY: EDGY

STYLING: CAL TANK

WITH: T.J. Maxx button down skirt; Zara ankle boots; H&M leather jacket; gold watch.

Happy Hump Day! Even if you may be stuck in the slumps, you can put a spin on Wednesdays by going minimalistic.

Pair a Cal tank with an A-line, button-down skirt and you'll instantaneously look styled. To stay warm as the weather takes its time transitioning from winter to spring, toss on a denim jacket. Adding layers will not only keep you protected from the wind and keep you cool as you walk to class, but also will add stylistic depth to your outfit. Thus, you instantly look like you spent more time styling your outfit than if you were to put on a tee and jeans. As the final touches, slip into a pair of mules and top it off with a black beret and you're ready to ace that midterm... you know what they say: "if you look good, you'll do good" ;-).

THURSDAY: GIRLY

STYLING: CAL T-SHIRT

WITH: Forever 21 denim pinafore and reflective sunnies; knee-high socks; and Target chelsea boots.

Happy Thursday! You are thiiiis close to Friday: keep your fashion streak going by layering a comfy Cal tee with a denim pinafore. (Check out Emily's Denim on Denim for more tips!) Is it a bit too chilly to go bare-legged? Put on some knee-high socks before you slip into a pair of black chelsea rain boots because with Berkeley weather, you never know when it'll rain. Lastly, grab a camel coat and an umbrella and you're all ready to go!

FRIDAY: GLAM

STYLING: CAL SWEATER (dress)

WITH: F21 reflective sunnies;  vintage fur coat; leather or black leggings; T.J.Maxx black, Zara ankle boots; gold earrings.

You've made it to Friday! (woo!) Congrats on making it through the week but now you’ve got a bigger dilemma than that Bio midterm: what do you wear when you've got a club meeting at 8 but a frat party at 9?

This look can easily transition from a day in class to a girl's night out. With the sweatshirt and leather leggings, you can still maintain your comfort but look fashionable because of the dramatic fur coat and black ankle or OTK boots. To complete the outfit, put on some dangly gold earrings and a gold watch; the gold accessories will shimmer under the nightlights, adding a luxurious touch to your outfit as you dance/drink your stresses away.

TIP: If this look is too dramatic or if you'd rather go over to a friend's house for a kickback, feel free to swap out the fur coat with a black duster coat and swap out the leather leggings for opaque black tights.

SATURDAY: MINIMALIST

STYLING: CAL T-SHIRT AND CAP

WITH: Uniqlo jeans; brown jacket; K-Swiss sneakers

Haven't done laundry in 2 weeks and have to go out to grocery shop or study? Toss on this comfy and crisp look to impress even the grouchy grocery cashier.

Though we denigrated the OG tee and jeans look throughout this article, there is a way to salvage and upgrade that outfit combination. Start with a light blue Cal T-shirt and tuck the front of it into a pair of stretchy skinny jeans. Next, slip into a slim leather jacket to stay warm and don a Cal baseball cap and a pair of silver, reflective sunnies. Grab your simple white sneakers and a reusable bag on your way out the door.

SUNDAY:  MINIMALIST (AGAIN)

STYLING: CAL SWEATSHIRT

WITH: Forever 21 culottes, denim jacket, and reflective sunnies; K-Swiss sneakers; ring-detail belt.

Ah, Sunday: simultaneously the best and the worst day of the week. But don’t worry, with this look you can finish your problem set AND still have time to meal prep.

Once you've rolled out of bed at noon, it might still be a bit chilly, especially if your apartment doesn't have heaters (rip Bay Area housing). So, toss on a sweatshirt over your PJ top and put on a pair of black culottes (AKA those pants that are form-fitting at the top but are suuuper loose at the bottom). To secure your pants and add a bit of detail, don a belt with some silver detailing. Last, hide your dirty hair with a newsboy cap (don't worry, we've all been there) and slip into a pair of comfy mules. Now roll your sleeves up, stop procrastinating, and start on your homework (Don't freak out, but it's due tomorrow!).

CONCLUSION
Your workload takes up enough of your time; don't waste precious time racking your brain to figure out what to wear. Sure, you could just layer your Cal sweatshirt over your Cal tank and slap on a pair of jeans. But if you're curious about trying new trends, follow these styling tips and you'll be dressed before someone says, "UC Berkeley: the #1 Public University in the world!" (triggered)
