How To Style Your Midterms

It seems that here at Berkeley midterm season is every season. Walk through one of the many libraries on campus and you will find countless students nervously studying throughout all hours of the day.  Instead of resorting to the standard sweats and T-shirt, follow this guide to look stylish while you ace your next test!

Chunky Sweater

Not sure if your classroom is gonna freeze your fingers till they’re numb or give you that uncomfortable butt sweat on your seat? Layering with a chunky sweater is the answer! Make your top layer something that looks cute, but will keep you warm, especially if your test is in a cold, draft lecture hall. Or, if your exam room is as hot as a sauna, you can quickly and easily remove this layer. When you exit the test and get hit with the sunlight that you haven’t seen in days since you’ve been living out of a cubicle in Moffit, simply tuck your sweater in your bag or tie it around your hips.

Scarf

Scarves are another layering essential, perfect for the chilly Bay Area temperatures. Dress up your plain long sleeves or solid colored sweaters with a simple infinity scarf you can throw on right before you head out. If the rest of your outfit is neutrally colored, try making a statement with a brightly colored scarf or pattern. A cotton scarf is the most versatile because you can wear it in the most extreme temperatures Berkeley has to offer. If you are feeling especially fancy, try knotting the scarf around your neck: it will not only keep you warm, but it will also have you looking pretty sophisticated for someone who got ready in only ten minutes. The scarf will keep your neck warm and add some shape and style to an outfit that could otherwise look baggy.

Joggers

Like sweats but more chic, joggers are the perfect solution to looking put together without sacrificing comfort during your midterms. Wear a dark color and give off the illusion that you’re actually rocking pants. Pair joggers with a form flattering long sleeve so your outfit doesn’t lose all shape. And when you throw that sweater on top, make sure to tuck in the front so everyone can see how toned the Berkeley hills have made your waist. Almost every shoe will compliment these versatile pants. If you want to be basic continue to sport your Birkenstocks, but if you are looking to be a little more stylish, opt for slip ons. However, I’d recommend your trusty sneakers if you need to run to your 8am midterm in the morning.

Slip-On Sneakers

Make that walk to your midterm full of comfort and style with slip on sneakers. With slip ons, you’ve mastered the art of looking street chic, and your feet will thank you later.  For some classic slip ons look to Vans or Converse.

However, if you want to up your game and have the cash to splurge, look at Vince or Jigsaw’s line of sneakers. Ladies, stick to no show socks—Lululemon’s Secret Sock works magic and seemingly manages to always stay put. Guys, consider investing in a pair of socks that are colorful and patterned—Pair of Thieves has unique designs that are “guaranteed to make you a better person”. Combine these kicks with your best joggers, or your most comfortable jeans... just make sure to roll them up!

Baseball Hat

Stayed up super late studying for this midterm and had to sacrifice showering? We’ve all been there, but conceal your bad hair day by rocking a timeless baseball cap. But, leave your Lids snapbacks at home and go for a cap made from a unique material like suede, or one with a woke message to show your GSI how cool you are. Girls, leave your hair loose to retain a touch of femininity with an otherwise masculine accessory.  Almost every casual outfit goes well with a cute hat and it’ll come in handy later when it protects your strained eyes from the mid-afternoon sun.

Now go ace those midterms Bears... or your outfits at least!
